The basics about me

Basic things about yourself

I thought this post prompt was funny because I would assume I've mentioned basic things once or twice... but have I? I talk about big things, and little things, but I don't know if I've ever just done a blog entry introducing myself.

  • My name is Erin Leah McCrea. My middle name is pronounced Lee.
  • My parents are Nancy and Richard, and they just celebrated their 40th anniversary.
  • I was born on September 11th, 1980. (That makes me 33).
  • My sister is 2 years older than me. She was born October 11th. She's one of my best friends.

  • I have blue eyes and my hair is sometimes light brown.
  • Speaking of hair. I've shaved mine off twice, for no real reason. I won't do it again.
Shaved head at 18 (and fearless), full head of hair at 33 (still fearless, but with a funny face).
  • I grew up in a town of 200 people, but don't feel like a small town girl. Or like I belonged in the small town.
My school. From K to 12.
  • I graduated high school in 1998.
  • I went to Katimavik - a government funded Canadian program a month after I graduated. It was nine months. I found it in a writing magazine, and have never regretted the decision to go. I travelled to Newfoundland, Ontario and Quebec.
  • I always knew I'd go to University, but took one more year off to work before I went. (Two years in all). I graduated with a BA in English in 2004.
  • I went to Korea a year later because the BA in English did not help me get a job. I taught English for a year, and broke up with my boyfriend of five years a month in. At the time it was the toughest thing I've ever done.
  • I learned a lot about myself that year. I was fearless for a while.
  • After floundering a little when I returned a year later, I decided to try out Broadcasting. I went to the Western Broadcasting College in Saskatoon.
  • I have yet to be a paid broadcaster, but discovered I love Creative Writing for radio. I have written in Melfort, SK. I've done sales in Whitecourt, AB, and am now back to Writing in Saskatoon. (And have been here for three years).
  • I have been writing short stories since I figured out how. I want to say 8 to 10 I started writing, and haven't stopped. I stopped writing fiction for a while, and just focused on non-fiction, but am back on the fiction track.
  • I have now spoken at 3 funerals. That seems like a lot to me. It meant a lot to be asked.
  • I love social media. It's made me lazy though. I find it so easy to catch up with friends through Facebook, that I rarely call people anymore. I still love it. I love sharing, and I love learning.
  • I'm around 5'2 in height, but I usually lie and say 5'3. I've got extremely petite legs. Extremely. My parents are both tall.
  • I have learned that the best way to live my life is to be grateful and appreciative of all I've got. Life hasn't always been perfect or fair, but I'm here to tell about it. http://lifeisgoodandhereisproof.blogspot.ca/
  • I will get my book published. And I will consider EVERY time I try to be one of the bravest things I've done.
  • Clint and I have been together for a little over 2 years. We are going to grow old together. It doesn't matter where or how, we just will.  Although I wouldn't mind the ring and marriage, I don't even really care as long as I'm with Clint, I know I'll be happy.
  • I love animals, and basically think that's the only reason for home ownership. I don't own a house in Saskatoon, so I have no pets. I used to though. And I miss them all the time.
  • I'm 33 and I still don't know if I want kids. Basically, I'll be happy with or without them. 35 is the age I've given myself to stop wanting them (for sure), and be okay with my life. I'm okay with it no matter what.
  • I'm shy and I'm quiet, and sometimes I'll blush when I'm telling a story. When you get to know me, I'm not shy and I'm not quiet, but I'll probably still blush when I'm telling a story.
  • My dad hasn't had a drink in over 30 years. He's pretty awesome. I am well aware of what can happen if I am not careful. I enjoy drinking, and am a social drinker, but I do try to stay away from drinking binges. (I'm to old for the three day hangover either way). I fully admit I like drinking though.
  • I hate bananas, feet and birds. But mostly bananas. I won't even eat breads or cakes or have drinks that have bananas. I'm grossed out just thinking about it.
  • On the other side of things, I could pretty much live off of mushrooms and cheese.
  • I don't look tough, but I am. Emotionally I mean. Physically, I'll cry if you pinch me. Emotionally, I can handle a lot.
  • Actually, I can handle a lot, but I cry more than I should. It's how I get out frustrations. It's not because I can't handle it, it just helps me deal with it. I cry when I'm mad, I cry when I'm sad, I cry when I'm happy. I'm still tough as hell.
  • I love to read, and am trying to expand the genres I read.
  • I used to watch A LOT of TV. I rarely watch it now. It makes me fat and lazy.
  • I love music. I love hearing a song, and having it take me back to a time in life that I completely forgot about until that moment. Rock, Alternative, Country, 90s... I love it all.
  • I have fucking fantastic friends. I don't swear often on my blog (lots in real life though,) so you know how fantastic they are. So many great ones. I'm incredibly lucky. They're always looking out for me. From near and far. I'm going to single two out, but they're all great: I think my life is so much better with Karen and Denise by my side.
  • I love taking pictures. Obviously.
Okay... basically, I can go on about basic things for quite a while, can't I? I don't know if all of these are basic. Depends what you consider basic, I guess. I like saying the word basic.

Thanks for reading.

Mrs Personality

3 things you like about your personality

I picked this prompt at random from my Post idea page (below). I like it. Why? Because I like myself.  I'm at an age, or have lived long enough to not focus on the bad things. I know I have them, but I either try to fix them, or use them as positive quirks.

  1. This kind of goes with what I've already said, but I like my self esteem. If that's part of my personality, it's a pretty good trait to have. I can look at myself in the mirror, and instead of picking myself apart, I don't. I usually like what I see. At times, I think I could lose a few pounds or I'm annoyed with the circles under my eyes, but I really never focus on that. I see the beauty in myself, and I see beauty in others. I try not to be negative about myself, and I try not to be negative about others. People should know how great they are on the inside and out.
I just found this picture in an old album. I love it of myself. I was in my 20s and looked fearless. (I wasn't).
  2. I like that after 32 (err... 33) years, I'm still unique and creative. I'm less shy about expressing it now. I am proud of my weird quirks, but wasn't always. I don't try hard to fit in (anymore). Those that like me, like me. Those that don't... well... obviously they're jerks. Ha. I like my sense of humour, which I use with my quirkiness a lot. Being able to laugh at myself has helped me quite a bit. I like the way my mind works, and I love that I'm able to write in all ways to get out my creativity. Everybody is unique, but not everybody has a way to express it. I used to be shy, and I like that I've finally learned how to let people see who I am. (Even though, I sometimes still blush while talking to friends.)
  3. I like that after YEARS of being in relationships or single, I am still a romantic. I am not jaded, and I am not bitter. I have picked myself up more than once. I know how to be single, and I have never settled (well, I have, but never stayed). It's brought me to Clint. I'm with him because I actively looked for somebody to share my life with, and I was picky. We chose each other. I'm not just romantic for me. I love seeing my friends happy and in love as well. I haven't always been romantic in my love life, and I'm glad I've found it again. I'm glad I can love with my whole heart, and have somebody who loves me back the same.
This is NOT a tattoo... I'm not that romantic (or crazy). It's paper.
These three things have also helped in my writing.
I'm able to see the beauty and the inspiration in the characters I write about. I like even my 'bad' characters to have some quality that makes them better.

I use my quirks and humour in my characters, and have yet to write somebody who doesn't know how to laugh. If they can't laugh, I hope to fix them.

And although romance is not ever the main story, I like to have love stories in my novel. Love makes the world go round (any love, not just the dating kind). There's no reason my characters shouldn't have some love as well.

And that's that. You've gotten a great glimpse into my ego. Obviously, I'm not going to share what I don't love about myself on social media or blogging because whether any of you know me or not (and already know my negatives), the only time I'd like to focus on them is when I'm focusing on how to change myself for the better.

Thanks for reading.

Three months of waiting, Time to WRITE

Monday July 7th will be three months since I've sent in my novel.

Since anybody who has read this blog AT ALL, already knows this, I'm going to leave it at that, and talk about the exciting new 'writing development.'

It's called: A WRITING DESK!!

Having a laptop makes it easy to write in any place, but I really like the idea of ALSO having a place that is my own writing place.

My parents have had a desk in their house that used to belong to my Grandfather. It's interesting because these desks weren't useful for a time when everybody needed a place for their big desktop computer. I can't remember the last time I had a big desktop computer. I imagine it to be a good letter writing desk, but now it's the perfect size for my laptop.

Now, it's my novel writing desk, or anything else I'd like to write on it. We moved it here today, from Plenty, and I FINALLY got to work on organzing in the spare room. (Also known as the library, writing room, room full of boxes.) I found a spot for it next to Clint's desk. (Which, I could have used, but now he can use his computer, and I can write next to him.)

I feel inspired thinking about the history of it. My grandma probably used to write letters on it. Maybe it's silly to be excited about this, but I think maybe, this is just what I've needed. I don't have to worry about what's going on with my Query, I can focus on my current book, my next book, I can write short stories, I can write letters, I can write in my journals, I can look into freelancing. I can do that from anywhere because it's a laptop, but now I HAVE a spot.

Here is it's new spot. Already with some inspirations on it. C and I, and a picture of my friend and I on an elephant. (What is more inspiring than an elephant ride in Thailand?)

Pictures. And a frog I just got in the mail from Nehal.
Binders FULL of past writings. It's all I have of some of my short stories. Plus, the big/hard binder is my novel.

Journals finally have a place.

There it is!

I love it.

Also, I have books to the right of me, books to the left of me, writing books right in front of me. I'm in Writing Nerd heaven!

If you're ever reading a blog entry (like, say, this one), or let's get really optimistic: if you're ever reading a book I've written, you can just assume it was edited or written from this very spot. (Until I move, but the desk and books will be moving with.)

Just one more pic. I found this in a scrapbook. The first picture is of my grandparents and their grandkids (me included -I'm the little one between my grandparents, watching Grandma). The bottom one is where the desk came from. That's the house my mom grew up in.

Unreleased Chapter... Whoa...

Post a previously unreleased chapter from one of your books.

I think we know what's going to happen here.

I'm not going to post a previously unreleased chapter from one of my books. I'm sure there will be more taken out, and there are chapters that have already been taken out, but until it gets published, I'm not going to share the stuff I took out. While it's all good writing, I can tell you now that when I share parts of my novel, it is going to be relevant to the novel.

I'll wait until my books actually become books to share the stuff I didn't love enough to put in. So far, I've taken out memories of the main character. Things I liked, but weren't really needed. I'm sure there will be more, but the only way I'll share is if I get published. So... wish me luck.

Also, I do feel that someday, my book will be published, so I can follow through on this.

The details about my publishing company say they should respond in 3-4 months, and Monday is 3 months.

That doesn't mean I'll get published, it just means I'll find out if I'm not going to get published.

That's that.

I was actually going to share one page of my novel, but chickened out.

We'll see, maybe sometime.

Happy Friday!

JULY IS HERE

July 3
I'm a bit late getting this out. I was working on my trip post. It's full of pictures and adventures, and was fun to write. http://erinisawriter.blogspot.ca/2014/07/my-family-vacation.html Now for the real blogging. I'm back at it!

It's a new month!

Life:
Life's pretty good. I'm happy, I'm in love, I'm attempting to be stress free. I've got a lot more adventures coming my way, and am excited to begin another great summer in Saskatoon.

I just got back from Newfoundland, and loved the time spent with my family, and the beautiful Newfoundland scenery.

I don't quite know what our plans are for the rest of the summer (or where C will be working), but it's going to be a blast. I'm going to spend as much time outside as I can.

Novel/Writing:
Here is how I'm feeling about this topic...

Next Monday it will be three months since I sent my Query in. I haven't written a lot since then. I've blogged like crazy, and loved every minute of it, but I haven't done a lot of writing or editing. I've been busy, but I'm not sure that 'being busy' is an excuse.

Waiting isn't an excuse either. I could have been half way done a new novel by now.

No reason to worry or feel guilty about what I haven't done. It's time to start writing.

Today I read something that inspired me. It made me think about a character in You Stand by Family. A character I wasn't planning to write about. I was going to leave her with only mentions in my next one, but ever since I read the quote, I can't stop thinking about her. I think I"m going to have to alter my plan. The first book was about Lucy, and the second was going to be set a year later with her younger sister, Kristy, as the main character.

I had started the Kristy novel, and couldn't get past the first page. I figured it would come. Now I know, it won't YET. I need to focus on Jenna. She's not a character I was ready to deal with, and possibly never would. My fickle brain is telling me something different.

I'm going to do one more edit of the first novel, and then I'm going to write about Jenna. It's harder because she's not family, but she has a lot of connections.

So that's my update. I can't wait to get to it. Writing every night is going to be my new goal. It's time.

Love:

I fall in love with this guy more and more every day. What else is there to say?

This Time Last Year:
I didn't do a lot of blogging in 2013, as I said before. These will be a lot more interesting in 2015. Here's what I was doing on fb:

I shared this one because I kind of started Game of Thrones, and then I set it aside. I'm still working on it (after a damn year). Hopefully I'll start reading it again soon.

And on Instagram: I shared a photo of Mom and Dad on their wedding day. This weekend, we will be celebrating their 40th. My sister and I went to the Hip. First time I've seen them. And the weather was gorgeous!

I have to go write now!

My Family Vacation

July 1 and 2

Happy Canada Day (yesterday)! I started this on the 1st, but misjudged how long it would take to get all the pictures sorted. So I'm extending Canada Day...

I love this country, and I thought a great post would be about the trip I was just on. As I've been talking about it for a while, my family and I were headed to Newfoundland. We arrived back on June 29th. My mom made this trip possible, and it was a really great family adventure.

Before leaving, and even after coming back, I've had more than one person ask if the reason we went was to visit family. That question baffles me because I didn't think we needed a reason. So - no family, we just wanted to spend some time in a province full of great history, interesting people, and beautiful scenery.

The last time I was in Newfoundland was in 1998, and it's just as beautiful as I remember it. This time, the experience was with my family, and I loved sharing some of it, and experiencing other parts for the first time with them. It was also a different season, so I got to see things I hadn't on my first trip like icebergs and whales.

I think all places in this world have something great to see, and hope to visit many, but in the meantime, I also enjoy seeing my own country. I'm so proud of this gorgeous country, and I'm so glad to have spent a week with my family in my favourite province (other than Saskatchewan). So: two stones; I'll share my photos from my trip, and share yet another reason I love Canada. I'm going day by day, trying not to post many photos, but I take a lot of photos, so it's doubtful I'll follow through.

Day 1:

This was the first thing we saw upon arriving. We got there at 8am, Newfoundland time, after travelling all night. We parked and went for breakfast, but luckily parked in front of the harbour, and this statue. On the morning of Canada Day, Newfoundland takes time to remember those lost. They celebrate Canada in the afternoon. It would have been interesting to be there for this day.
Our first meal at a recommended breakfast restaurant. Bagel Cafe. I ordered Halibut and eggs because it really seemed like the perfect first Newfoundland meal. (Although, I love bacon).

I had seen Erin's Pub 16 years ago on Water Street in St John's. I was pretty excited to find it this time (and have a drink in it). The morning we arrived, I just posed in front of it.

The first morning involved a lot of tourist shopping. Most of what I bought was for others, but these were my first buy for me, and one of my favourites. Seriously? Awesome flip flops. I also had my sister by my side, encouraging my buy. (Love her!)

After we checked in, my dad took a nap, and we tried to figure out what to do so we'd stay awake. We chose Botanical Gardens in St Johns. It was a great decision, and also involved feeding ducks! I'm a sucker for anything that involves feeding animals. http://www.mun.ca/botgarden/

I took about five thousand pictures of the flowers at the Botanical Garden. These two were my favourites. Of MANY.

Day one was our first iceberg sighting. We all took many pictures of our first iceberg... without knowing how many great ones we'd see in the next days. This was VERY zoomed in.

Day Two:
I apologize in advance. I loved this day too much to just post a couple of pictures.

We started off the morning with a trip to Cape Spear. I was here with Katimavik in 1998. That year, the waves were HUGE. The rocks I'm sitting on, would have been covered in waves. They were a lot smaller this year. I've posted a smaller picture of my previous visit.

I LOVE foot pictures. It's like proof I was there, but gives the selfies a break.

I love my sister. Cape Spear photos.

Jo and the lighthouse.

This picture was a fluke. My sister was taking a picture of me sitting on the rocks, but I also saw a whale at the same time. This is the only picture I have of the quick and uncooperative whales. Icebergs are much easier to photograph. Still - awesome!

My mom and dad are about to celebrate 40 years of marriage. So my sister and I made them shirts for their anniversary. We also made some for us, so we could take dorky family photos. Team McCrea.

Next in the day, we went to a little place by St John's (and Cape Spear) called Mobile to go for a boat trip. This was the wait for the boat to arrive. I love the picture of the rocks. The second is pretty much my pose in most photos. I'm not very original.

It was just the four of us, plus the driver and tour guide on the boat, so it was a great first boat experience for us in Newfoundland. We didn't see any whales, but lots and lots of birds. The actual Molly Bawn website seems like it's been hacked, so I'm adding a link from Trip Advisor. tripadvisor

This is my biggest nightmare. Bird scare me.

Puffins are cool though.

Sheep! On an island in the middle of the ocean. What's cooler than that?

For supper, we stopped at the YellowBelly pub. BEST food ever. And great beer.

Stopped to sing with this guy on George Street. He loved it. Plus my sister looks gorgeous in her photo bombing face.

Last, we stopped at Erin's pub. Was fabulous. Great band played called Generations. My parents loved the music, and we all had a fantastic time. Also bought C an Erin's Pub tuque!

Day Three: (last day staying in St Johns)
 Signal Hill. Newfoundland and Labrador.
Quick story, I tripped shortly after this picture (above). I missed a step, and twisted my ankle, and continued the day (and week) with a VERY sore ankle.
And ANOTHER beautiful iceberg.

Signal Hill. We climbed down many stairs to see the icebergs and ocean from a closer and different view. (With the sore ankle). The second picture shows where we hiked from (and had to hike back up to). I went down with my dress and birks... wasn't a problem.

Had a tasting and tour at the Quidi Vidi brewery. My mom discovered she doesn't hate beer. The whole thing cost 10 dollars, which is a pretty great deal! http://www.quidividibrewery.ca/

Quidi Vidi area. And freezing water to help my ankle.
We had some time for Water Street shopping. Including Freak Lunchbox.

Lobster for supper. Delicious!

Day four:
Heading towards Twillingate. With a stop in Terra Nova National Park. My new foot protection.

Terra Nova. The Marine Centre was closed, but we still got to look around. It was a huge flashback for me. This is the place I worked while in Newfoundland in 1998.

Foot in the ocean.

I used to work here! Was sad not to be able to show it to my family. Closed on Tuesday? Seriously?

I built a boardwalk in 1998 with the Katimavik crew. Is this it? I have no idea.

Gorgeous place.

I used to live in this town for three months. The house was located behind the Irving. That's the only reason I could still find it. We actually moved to a different house after a couple of weeks, but this one was easier to locate. Glovertown had no tourist things for us, we just so I could show them the town I lived in.

Almost to Twillingate. Another iceberg photo.

This is where we stayed in Twillingate.

Out for a show our first night. Newfoundland singers. And Touten with great jam. http://www.visittwillingate.com/thesplitpeas

This was also the day I missed Clint the most. I missed him all the time, but was having a hard time that day particularly. Maybe because of all the driving we did. Or just because my heart was homesick for it's other half. I gave him a call that night (we usually text), and felt better.

Day Five: The only day with bad weather.

We got up in the morning and headed for our second boat tour of the trip. This one included A LOT of rain. No whales again, but we saw A LOT OF ICEBERGS. Way more than in St Johns. Twillingate has a lot of bergs, and a lot of Bergy Bits. The pictures below are of our tour. It's hard to post just one. Take notice of the owl shaped iceberg. How great is that? http://www.captdave.ca/

He also showed us how he checks the Lobster traps. And caught a couple.

Next, we got out of the rain. We went to a winery. I was super excited about this, as I'd done some research about it before we left for Newfoundland. It wasn't nice enough for a glass of wine while watching the 'whales' and icebergs, but we did a tour and sampled wines. I had wine (Moose Joose) Ice cream. And then I bought a case of wine. 10 dollars for delivery. You can't go wrong. Can't wait for it to arrive! http://www.aukislandwinery.com/

I just can't resist sticking my head through a sign.

Went to explore after that. We found this. A beautiful place to lay your pets to rest.

Day Six: Today we left Twillingate after breakfast, and headed towards Gros Mourne National Park, along the Viking Highway. We decided to drive through Gros Mourne so we could get as far as we could, and then return to the Park on the return trip. We were headed for St. Anthony, or some place near there. After travelling all day, after we stopped for supper, we decided to spend the night. Mostly because we were exhausted. It made the trip in the morning a lot shorter.

The hotel in Twillingate had homemade jam with Nefoundland fruit and bread every morning for breakfast. It's a delicious way to start the day.

We stopped for lunch just before Gros Morne, This is poutine. With dressing (stuffing) and meat. Unhealthy but OH SO delicious.

We stopped for some pictures in the park. Gros Morne is gorgeous. That's all I could remember of it. The beauty. My memory was correct.

Outside of Gros Mourne, we needed to get out of the car, and walk, so Jodi and I went waterfall hunting. 3k walk for small falls at Torrent River. Still great. Mom and Dad drove which meant we only had to go one way.

This is at our new home for a couple of days. Tucker Cottages. We didn't last long out there. Black flies were attacking.

Jodi and I decided to go on one more hike. We left Mom and Dad to relax, and went to find the ocean. It was 2k each day, so we got lots of walking in this day. As long as we kept walking, and didn't stop to take pictures, the insects didn't get to us.

And last picture of the day. I got my own pull out bed! First time the entire trip I got to sleep like a starfish!

Day Seven: We did a lot in this day.

Started off my day with a Newfoundland specialty. Bologna and eggs... When in Newfoundland...

Saw the Thrombolites. They only exist there and in Australia.

Reminded me of the move with Kevin Bacon. The scary one with the rocks.

My mom and I went 'offroading' to touch iceberg bits. So awesome!! (and cold).
Pretty darn gorgeous.

Showing my rock climbing expertise. In a dress.

DANGER!!!!

After fighting the bear, I FINALLY found an iceberg to pose in front of with my iceberg beer. My family must have been SO sick of me.

Hello. Seafood Chowder? I love you!

Jodi and I made friends with some vikings.

We went to a Government run viking village. It was cool.
Earning my keep.

These two, are the very best. Love them so much!

Mom's first steps into the ocean!!!

Then we went to a different viking village. Not government run, and WAY more fun. http://www.norstead.com/main.asp

We got to feed sheep. Jo knew I'd be in the second I heard that. Loved them!

Also. I got to throw an Axe. I wasn't great at it. Jo (my sister) got hers in the first throw, and was too quick for me to get a picture.

I think I'm going to be very good at being a viking.

On the way home, we saw a MOOSE! We'd seen them before, but this was the closest. Also, easier to photograph than whales.

These little tiny Newfoundland nature flowers were gorgeous.

And, to end our day, the girls enjoyed some Newfoundland wines.

Day Eight:

Drove all across the Viking Highway to find an open breakfast joint.

Lighthouses, waves, McCrea gals, ocean... love Newfoundland. Love waves. Love life. Port au Choix.

Loved all the side roads, and all the great things to see.

Harbour

Drinking Quidi Vidi Beer while I can. And my great new shirt, "You can take the girl out of Newfoundland, but you can't take the Newfoundland out of the girl."
Gross Morne National Park

Little cute town next to the ocean. One of my favourite views.

Museum. Has Poo. Very important.

Gosh I love this country.

Adventure at the Falls!

Our new home for our last night. No cell service or Internet. What's a city girl like me supposed to do? Watch the horses I guess!

Moose Supper
COD TONGUE!!

Day Nine

One last adventure. Long drive to Big Falls, and worth the drive!

Water Falls and fishermen. Best sight for the last day.

A BEACH!

Last lunch before catching the plane in Deer Lake.

Going home!!!

It was hard to only choose my favourite pictures because I have a lot! That was my trip. It was wonderful, and I'm so grateful I had a chance to go. Don't just go if you have family there, it's a great experience for absolutely everybody.

And as always:
Most of my ideas are coming from http://erinisawriter.blogspot.ca/2014/03/march-24th-looking-forward.html It's leads to another blog where I found the ideas. My April onward details start with that post.
