Favourite Books (Judge me if you must)

April 8

Share your 9 favourite books of all time.

You know when somebody ask you what music you listen to, and you just KNOW that they are asking to judge you?

That's how I feel about this post. I tell you what my favourite nine books are, you can judge me.

Then again, I've also admitted this month that I play Candy Crush Here  and watch soap operas Here. I guess this post can just be room for more judgement. (haha).

Now, to choose my nine favourite books of all time. Not an easy task. Those are my books. In the boxes, and the ones I hadn't packed yet.

I have linked to my original thoughts on some of the books. As I've said before, I at one time tried to start a book blog. To put it bluntly, it was a very half-assed attempt. Some of these books are before, and some of them are just simply not on there because I forgot. I'm trying to get back to writing about books, but I am a slow reader lately.

I'm actually not good at critiquing books. I like them or I don't. Even when I don't like them, I usually force myself to finish the book.  So my descriptions of why I love books may not make sense. I just do or I don't.

White Oleander by Janet Fitch: I've read this book more than once. I love the journey she took (although sad that she was forced to take it), and I loved all the characters. I enjoyed the movie as well, but it was missing A LOT of what was in the book. That makes sense: a five hour movie would have been hard to take.
Here are some reviews on Goodreads. It's either love it or hate, I guess. https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/32234.White_Oleander?from_search=true

Still Alice by Lisa Genova: I honestly think that anybody who has known or dealt with Alzheimer's should read this book. It's not often you can put yourself in the situation of somebody going through that. How does it feel to slowly lose your memory? I hope I never find out. (As soon as I unpack, I'm going to find this book and read it again). It made me see my grandma's situation in a different way.
Goodread reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/2153405.Still_Alice?from_search=true

Flowers For Algernon by Daniel Keyes: This book was brilliant. I read a short story version when I was in high school, and read the novel while in Korea. It's a beautiful and sad story. It, like Still Alice, helps you to see something in the eyes of somebody else who experiences the world in a different way. I've not seen the movie.
Goodread reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/18373.Flowers_for_Algernon

Anne of Green Gables by L.M. Montgomery: From My Book Blog: Anne I don't think I need to explain why I love this book. I've talked about the character more than once. Here and Here. This book is for dreamers, or people who want to be dreamers. I loved the movie as well.
Goodread Reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/8127.Anne_of_Green_Gables

Secret Daughter by Shilpi Somaya Gowda: Thoughts from my Book Blog Honestly, my thoughts on the book blog almost say it all. I have read this twice, and I'm sure I'll read it many more times. I like books with different cultures than mine. I like learning new things, and learning about new ideas, and seeing things differently than I'm used to. I loved this book. I loved the story, I loved the characters (especially the Grandma), and I loved the settings.

Goodread reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/6905012-secret-daughter

Life on the Refrigerator Door by Alice Kuipers: My Book Blog Thoughts Side note, the author lives in Saskatoon. This book is written in a different way than any other I've read. It is also proof that something profound and heartbreaking can be done in few words. Something I could probably learn from.

Goodread reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/256003.Life_on_the_Refrigerator_Door

My Sister's Keeper by Jodi Picoult: This was my travel book while sight seeing in Thailand and Taiwan. I shared the story with my travel partner, and when I finished the book, I cried. I was also shocked. FYI: The movie is NOT the same as the book. If you've watched the movie, do not assume you know the ending.

However, I have to admit one thing. This is the only Jodi Picoult book I've loved. I've finally given up on her. I read this book first, and tried to like all the others. I didn't. I was hoping she'd be like an author I read in high school, Lurlene McDaniel. I read those terribly sad books, and I loved them all. This didn't happen with Jodi Picoult. At least I loved this one. Not everybody did, as you can see by the reviews.

Goodread reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/10917.My_Sister_s_Keeper

The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan: I read this in university and I loved it. Unfortunately, I only read it once, and I can't remember anything other than the fact that I loved it. (I hated the class though). When I unpack, I'm going to search for it, and read it again. If I can't find it, I guess I'll add it to my birthday list. It was a book that allowed me to see life in North America through different eyes and a different culture.

Goodread reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/7763.The_Joy_Luck_Club

The Help by Kathryn Stockett: What I said on the Book Blog It was a book that I couldn't put down, although I wasn't sure if I wanted to include it in my top nine. The fact that I couldn't decide what else to replace it with was why it won. Although as it gets farther and farther away from my first impressions, I've started to like it less.

Goodread reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/4667024-the-help

Also, honourable mention goes to the book I just finished:

Dead Rock Stars by Wes Funk: I really enjoyed this book. It was his first, and I can't wait to read all the rest. I also just took a workshop from him in Saskatoon, which makes it all the more exciting that I loved this book. Thoughts from the Book Blog

Also, here is the entry about the workshop, which was great, but I wrote the post with a dark cloud over my head. It's gone now. http://erinisawriter.blogspot.ca/2014/04/writing-workshop.html

I also think The Book Thief is going to be on this list, but I haven't finished it yet. Below is a picture of a quote from the book. That's about where I am. I'm adding reviews below, but I haven't read them yet. Death gives enough spoilers in the actual book.

Reviews: https://www.goodreads.com/book/show/19063.The_Book_Thief

To remember what my favourite books are, I had to log into Goodreads: https://www.goodreads.com/. It's also when I realised, I'm currently reading three books. I don't know how I ever finish a book.

MAN, I like links.

Most of my ideas are coming from http://erinisawriter.blogspot.ca/2014/03/march-24th-looking-forward.html It's leads to another blog where I found the ideas. My April onward details start with that post.

My Novel in the Movies

Your book is a movie! Who’s in your dream cast?

I have obviously thought about this. I'm sure many writers have. I'm adding links to the descriptions of my novel characters from older blog entries as well so you can see my original thoughts.

You may notice the actors I chose are almost all ridiculously good looking. I can't help it. My novel has good looking people.

Character Descriptions

Lucy Avery (Luce): She's the main character.

Rachel Bilson: She's an actress who can be serious and can laugh. She's shorter. Lucy is short. She's also had practice with drama.

Kristy Avery (Kristina) (Kris): This is Lucy's youngest sister. She's 17.

Dakota Fanning: I'll be honest. I wanted a blond and innocent looking teenager. I couldn't think of many other options. She's a bit older than 17, but it will still work. She always played smart characters when she was younger, and I think she could play Kristy perfectly.

Charlie Avery: He's the middle sibling. He is in his late 20s.

Ian Somerhalder: I needed a smooth talker. Somebody who can bat his beautiful eyes at you, and get away with things. He's not always a good guy, but he's pretty great to look at. He's a bit older than Charlie, but I figure if he can play a vampire that never ages, he can handle being 28.

Shauntell Morris (Shaun): She is Lucy's best friend.

Emma Stone: She's quirky, she's fierce and loyal, she's funny. She also has red hair, which is how I imagined Shauntell. It wasn't until today that I thought of her, but now she fits perfect. Although, she's not quite as tall as Shauntell is. She is taller than the other females in the 'movie'.

Character Descriptions Part 2

Tom Avery: He is the father of Lucy, Charlie, and Kristy.

Ed Harris: He's a dad type character. He's smart, and he's approachable.

I can't find a good clip of him, but most people know who Ed Harris is. He can do almost any role.

Janine Avery: She is the mother of Lucy, Charlie and Kristy.

Mary Steenburgen: I love her. She's the perfect age, and she can go from one extreme to the other in moods. She's tough when she needs to be, but sometimes forgets to be.

Grandma: Elizabeth Channing:

Originally, I wanted Mary Beth Peil, but she's only 10 years older than the parents. I couldn't find a good clip of her either. She's also Jackie on The Good Wife. The more I think about it, the more I do think she's too young.

So I searched actresses born in the 30s. I found the perfect one.

Doris Roberts; I needed somebody who could be tough. I'm not positive she'd work, but I can't think of anybody else.

James Shannon: He's almost the perfect man. He's a love interest. He lives in Saskatoon. He's a family guy (his family), and he follows his heart. He says what he is thinking and stands up for what he believes in. He's got green eyes, dark brown hair, beautiful smile, and he's tall. He's basically my dream man. Even with things that seem to be in the way of his romantic life, he's willing to fight for what he wants. This book isn't a romance, I promise, but there is a bit of romance in it.

First of all, I left the description of him because I wanted to show how impossible it is to pick somebody to be him. I mean, I could use my dream man, C, but that wouldn't be appropriate because I'm not the lead gal.

I want him to be gorgeous, but approachable. He's the hardest character to choose.

The winner is: Jensen Ackles. Because other than C (who told me he didn't want to be in it), he's almost perfect. (And I love the clip).

Jenna Millar: Was friends with Charlie. She's also James' ex-girlfriend.

Jenna Dewan-Tatum. She's the only person I could see clearly from the start. She's brave and tough, but sometimes needs help. She's also absolutely stunning.

Dan: Shauntell's boyfriend.

Joshua Jackson: He's cute and funny. He loves the woman he's with, and he's really the perfect choice.

Ryan: This is Kristy's boyfriend.

Liam Hemsworth: Again, he's a bit old for an 18 year old boy, but I have no idea who else could be in it. Everybody seemed too young. This casting will probably change, but it's all I can think of right now.

There are a couple of other characters, but this is all I'm going to 'cast'. These are my important characters.

This one was fun. Obviously, I love my characters quite a bit so picking real people to be them was a 'serious' job for me.

Complaints about Social Media Complainers

May 6th The Face of the Book
I don't quite know how to write this post. I've wanted to for quite a while, but keep coming up with reasons not to. Possibly because it's been done.

I spend a lot of time on Facebook. I am done apologising for it. I am on it, I go on Twitter, and I blog. As far as social networking go, I am using these as much as I can to get my name out there, and to share my writing.

I also post funny pictures, pictures with friends, pictures of my day, and selfies. Again, I won't say I'm sorry for that.

I spend time reading updates on Facebook. I sometimes read articles that are posted, and I sometimes watch videos. I don't always. It depends whether I'm interested.

I look at pictures others post, I read the inspirational or funny quotes they post, and I comment or share if I see something that interests me.

If somebody posts good or exciting news, I'll usually like or comment. If they post news that is sad or angers them, I sometimes comment, or send them a private message.

I try not to let a lot of things bother me on Facebook.

I get annoyed when the same post is shared over and over. I don't usually comment, but I sometimes wish people would research what they post before just saying anything. I've done this myself though.

I also am not comfortable reading 'public' Facebook fights between people. I do read them though. Sometimes I laugh, and am happy I'm not in that place.

I HATE HATE HATE slut shaming posts. I hate post or memes that make fun of others. I think adults that post this should think about what they post before they complain about disrespectful teenagers.

My annoyances, for the most part, come from those that are ALWAYS negative about what others post on Facebook.

In my personal and humble opinion, if you don't like what somebody is sharing, instead of getting annoyed and making fun of them, just stop reading the posts. Unfriend them, or block the posts. Or, god forbid, quit Facebook if everything you see pisses you off.

If you don't like game requests, block them. It's possible. I know this because I don't ever get them. I don't get notifications on my phone or email of ANY kind, and I blocked all game requests years ago. If I get a new one, I block the game. Problem solved. I try not to send out requests unless I know the person is playing a game, but sometimes the game misleads you. That being said, I really don't play a lot of fb games. How can I when I'm blogging, writing, working, commenting, and taking selfies? I only have so much time in a day.

If somebody wants to talk about something great they achieved, and encourage others, good on them. I will never begrudge them that. (Speaking from somebody who talked about finishing a book for days.) Yes, countdowns to weddings or big events get to be too much (I totally did a countdown for my Mexico trip), but who cares? If it bothers you, log off Facebook or unfriend them. If it makes you angry... if it makes you SO angry that somebody is excited about what they're doing, maybe it's time to figure out why something written on a computer makes you so upset.

I like the motivational posts. Somebody finished a marathon... that's really great. (Also, something I will respect, but probably will never do).

Speaking of viral posts though. This post has been ALL over the place lately on FB. Look Up is the name. I think it's nice, and I like those talking poem type posts. I've seen others that I've liked better about other topics. This particular one, while I get the point, I find strange that it's ALL over social media when the very point is to put down your phones and log off Facebook. I feel like a lot of people are going to watch it, and then go on with their every day lives, including the social media and phones.

This one (below) didn't go viral, but I saw it on Facebook and liked it. It's a bit off subject, but I thought about it today because it's read in the same way as the above one.

 Love This One Here: Mathematics

One other post, I DID NOT like. All over Facebook about two to three weeks ago a picture and blog link were going around Facebook entitled "Hey Fatty"

Basically, it said something about how you'll be amazed and surprised at the inspirational post it becomes. Here's my opinion: you don't have to post a picture of somebody who didn't agree to be part of an 'inspirational post', and you don't have to start it in a rude and condescending way just to shock people into reading it. I get why she or he wrote it, but I don't get the need to be an ass. I've posted the link below, as well as two responses to it.

Post Here

First Response
ResponseToBoth

One more thing before I stop my complaining Facebook post. I get frustrated at the pictures people sneak of others (strangers) and post because they thought they were wearing something funny or strange or because they don't fit in their view of what people should look like. I am not saying I don't sometimes judge (I do), I just think it doesn't always need to be shared on Facebook. As I said above, if this gets to me too much, the solution is easy. I will ignore it, delete it, or log off Facebook. (I will probably not ever quit Facebook. That would be an empty threat.)

I don't know if any sort of point got across in this post, but I'm still happy I wrote it. I got long winded and away from the point. The point is Facebook is useful and I, personally, love keeping in contact with 'long losts'. I sometimes need a break though. People share and post more than they need to (me included), but if it gets to me, I'll shut down, take a break or unfriend. I'll never 'quit' Facebook. It would be an empty threat.

I will be sharing this on my Social Networks as soon as I proof read and spell check. (Which doesn't usually stop the mistakes.)

Update: I thought of one other thing. Hashtags. They seem to be a running joke with EVERYONE. I get the humour - it gets to be a bit much. People have commented to me (or complained) that I use them on Facebook. I don't use them on Facebook. I use them on Instagram and on Twitter. If I hashtag something on Instagram, I can click on it and look at all the pictures other people posted of the same thing. If I hashtag on Twitter, I can click on it and see things with the same hashtag. Make jokes all you want, it's opened up an entirely new network of friends and other writers. Any writer can just look up 'amwriting' or 'blogging' and see all the others who are doing the same thing. I don't do it on Facebook unless it's been shared from Instagram or Twitter. I do that. I'm not sure of the point of them on Facebook, but I keep that more private than the rest of my social media world.

Complain Away. Ha.

Until tomorrow.

Writing update Monday!

May 5th

And just like that, it's Monday again.

I am now three weeks into the waiting game. Time is going quickly, but the frustrating thing is how much longer I may have to wait. I also don't know how they would contact me. A letter, a phone call, an email? Obviously, if it is a no, it will be a letter (I think). I'm still going for the optimism though.

I was recently followed back on Twitter by the Publishing Company I submitted my manuscript to. I had followed them months ago. I don't know if this is a sign of good things, or if they just didn't follow back until now. Either way, it is something. (Or maybe it isn't, I really have no idea).

Three weeks have gone fast. I'm lucky because these next few months are all going to be crazy busy. We are still looking for a new home, we will still have to move, I have two out of town events this month, one early in June, and at the end of June my family and I are heading to Newfoundland for a week. As I said, I won't have a lot of time to worry about what's going on with my manuscript. (Although, I REALLY hope the response doesn't come while I'm in Newfoundland).

I'm kind of writing, but mostly just blogging lately. I mentioned before that I'm going to a writing retreat this weekend. I'll hopefully be doing some extreme novel writing to get me started on this new one. It will be interesting as I've never done a writing retreat.

I'm going to miss C. He hasn't had to leave for work, so I'm very used to him being with me. I like it a lot.

However, I'm excited for a new writing experience. It's time for me to do new things with my writing, and to do as much as I can with it. I'm guessing a Writing Retreat will be the perfect experiment. There will be about five other writers, and I guess what happens is we write during the day, and relax and discuss during the night. It may be just what I need. My stressed out brain could probably use a weekend to not be stressed out.

In other writing updates, I have been blogging on both my blogs without breaks (other than the odd day) since January. I'm proud of myself for that. Pretty good resolution to keep... WAY easier than exercising every day. (haha, but doesn't help keep me skinny). I'm really enjoying it, and also proud of myself for keeping it up. I just hope I don't run out of things to day. (If you ask C, that isn't possible).

I would add blogging into this list.

Slightly unrelated, I had a dream that C and I were in Mexico on vacation, but it was a last minute trip. I realised once I was there that I had forgotten to ask for the days off from work. Chances were the hot holiday would have resulted in a job loss. It made for a stressful vacation. I decided to throw one more picture of me being strange in Mexico last year. (I requested the days off a month before I left.)

I felt like it was time to add some pictures with quotes. I do always enjoy quotes, and like I said, I don't like using them, unless I can add it to my own picture.

Enjoy.

Until tomorrow.

Weekend Pictures

Prompt: Share a photo from your life for each day in a typical week.

Saturday and Sunday, May 3rd and 4th, 2014 Day 6 & 7 of 7

The Weekend
I've decided to do the last of the picture prompts together. The 'average' weekend usually blends together. So below is my weekend.

Coffee in bed. C and I have our morning rituals. One of us gets up to make the coffee, the other serves it when it's finished. Than we enjoy our first cup before getting on with the day. This is only a weekend thing.

This isn't typical, but it will be this summer. Garage sales. There is a big one that my work pal and I went to on Saturday. This elephant was not for sale, but was there. My friend, D, and I went bargain hunting (Spend-Thrift Saturdays) quite often last summer. It's a nice way to spend the day.

Saturday night. Wine and ice cream with C. What else do I need?

I bought this for the name.

The best grill ever. Makes good bacon and veggies.

This was our Sunday breakfast. I always make us bacon and eggs on either Saturday or Sunday. Delicious.

I also played Candy Crush. I like having silly games to play. I can admit it. I mean, I've already admitted to my Soap Opera addiction. I may as well spill all.

That's my weekend. Back to regular posts next week. Thanks for living my week with me.

Secrets about the Days of my Bold and Restless Life...

A reference to General Hospital was hard to fit into the title. I left it out.

I have a confession to make. You could ask me about any soap that's currently on air right now, and I'd be able to tell you something about it. Current plot, actors, characters... I'd know something.

I'll never apologise for this. Although, I may be slightly embarrassed if you call me on it. Which, of course means that I need to publicly declare it on my blog. Although I did mention it once before on my Villains post (here.)

I actually no longer watch them because I don't have the time, but I read the recaps for GH and somehow keep track of the other soaps all at Soap Central

There's a point to this confession, I promise. It's just taking me a while to get to it.

I grew up with Another World on in the background. My mom watched it, her mom watched it, and my dad's mom watched it. Then it ended, and we all had to find new soaps. (Although, I don't think my mom watches soaps anymore).

I floundered around for a while, but started watching General Hospital in my university days.

My Grandma M started watching Young and the Restless. Every time we spoke on the phone, we'd talk a little about Y&R. I liked that. She would tell me what Sharon and Nick were up to, or what Phyllis was doing. I miss it. I always tried to keep updated even after she died.

I feel like I still watch Soaps as a tribute to her. For those of you thinking that's not really a great tribute, I ALSO do Relay for Life. You can donate HERE at my fundraising page. That's correct. I just asked for money in a blog post. No regrets. She passed away on April 14th, 2009, and had been diagnosed with cancer.

Yesterday, a big actress from Y&R that quit last year, made an appearance on GH, and will be staying. For those of you not watching soaps, you won't understand how big of a move this was. Twitter was going crazy. All I wanted to do was call my Grandma and talk to her about it. It's ALL I wanted to do. I miss her for so many reasons, and one of them is that we could talk about silly things like who was doing what on a soap opera. My sister and I do that now. It's something I love that we do. "Soap dish emails."

I'll admit that was a lot of information to give when really all I have to say is: I miss my grandma.

So to finish my Prompt for today:

Prompt: Share a photo from your life for each day in a typical week.

And here we go with Friday, May 2, 2014 Day 5 of 7

I read the GH daily recaps. From Monday to Friday. On Mondays, I also read something called 'two coops' about every soap that's on. It's like a weekly opinion/update. All from Soap Central.

Two more Daily Photo Prompts, and you'll know all the secrets of my week. There are no pictures, but the work afternoon is quite similar to the work morning. Same place, same accounts, still a Creative Writer. Today it includes pulling out my hair.

Here's what I do when I get home from work during week nights:

Just one glass of wine a week night. Sometimes, like when this picture was taken (Wednesday), it's sitting there waiting for me when I get home.

MAY IS HERE

May 1, 2014

The picture post will continue. I'll add one picture today of my afternoon, but first, I'm going to continue my new thing. I did this last month, and hope to do it every month now APRIL POST HERE.

It's a new month, and I want to focus on that.

Life: Life is pretty similar to what it was last month. Except the snow has melted - possibly it will even stay gone. April was full of teaser weather, and it's nice that things are looking up. I can't wait for green grass and trees now. C and I are looking for a place to rent. It isn't the right time for us to buy. We will move the end of the month regardless, but the quicker we find a place, the less stressed out I am.

Novel: My query letter is written, and it's sent away to the first publisher. Now it's all about waiting and patience. I'm going on a Writer's Retreat next weekend (May 9-11). I'm pretty excited to start work on Novel Number 2.

Love: May is anniversary month. We'll have been together for two years. We're good. I'm positive we'll have many more anniversaries. Here's a picture from around the 1 year. (In Mexico when C had long hair.)

This Time Last Year: Well, I wrote one blog entry at the end of April for This is My Life. I didn't do a lot of blogging last year. Here is the post: 4 things

This time last year on Facebook:

I went to Mexico... this year, I'll be moving. Not quite as exciting a month, but to quote Peter Pan: "To live will be an awfully big adventure." Doesn't matter where I am, as long as I'm living.

And this time last year on Twitter:
I wasn't on it much, but I did watch the first season of Big Brother Canada, and tweeted about it. This was the finale. I'm not watching it this year. Three shows a week is too much for me.

Prompt: Share a photo from your life for each day in a typical week.

And here we go with Thursday, May 1, 2014 Day 4 of 7

Lunchtime blogging. (The blog past).

Update: Also because when I post my night tomorrow, it will be different than the average weeknight (CAUSE IT'S FRIDAY), I am going to post one more thing I do every night (in picture form). Other than eat supper, drink a glass of wine, and make coffee, I ALWAYS set out clothes for the next day. Makes sleeping in easier. AND: this shirt looks better on than not. Just in case you're thinking it looks not so wonderful.
